Analysis: Genre in 1984

Drama; Dystopian Literature; Parody; Science Fiction

Well, the drama is pretty clear what with the heavy conflict and emotional weight. We're not even going to touch "Dystopian Literature," because this book pretty much defines the genre. Parody is Orwell's specialty, and he does it here by exaggerating human failings for purposes of social commentary. The science fiction comes in with the crazy technological aspect of Oceania: the weird food, telescreens, the Thought Police. If it sounds futuristic, it's probably science fiction.
